“Stop looking at me like that,” I said around a mouthful of the best fish burger I’d ever had. Sorry, Coho. The fish camp in the marina in Downtown Mad had taken me to didn’t fuck around where seafood was concerned. The blackened shrimp and aioli could make any foodie orgasm. “You’re making me feel self-conscious.”
“Can’t help it.” He leaned forward and rested his forearms on the table. The round tabletop was wooden, old, and attached to a wine barrel. It went with the fishnets in the ceiling and the wall behind the bar made up of sea glass. “I don’t think I can go back to pretending even if I tried. I’ll be your personal stalker until it hits me that this isn’t a dream.”
Then he said things like that…
I grinned and took a gulp of my soda.
Unlike him, I didn’t get full on one burger and a loaded baked potato, so I continued scarfing down my second burger and listening to Madigan. He was going all out. Whenever we were away from each other, there would be Skyping and frequent texting. Maybe some would feel suffocated jumping into this with a fair amount of restrictions, but it had the opposite effect on me, and he knew it. I could tell he had me in mind first and foremost when setting up rules.
Already, I could feel myself relaxing into this. It was like stepping out on a platform, ready to jump, and knowing I had the best safety net to catch me.
Having fewer worries would lessen my anxiety. Having less anxiety would improve my mood swings. In turn, I wouldn’t doubt myself as much or be as angry with myself. It was one of the biggest hurdles with bipolar disorder. The ripple effect—a small stone could cause major damage over time.
“I’m happy. I just wanted to say that,” I said quickly.
He stopped talking, having been on a minor lecture about my stress levels, and scooted his chair a bit closer to me. “Give me a kiss.”
I reached over the side of the table and smacked a kiss to his lips, smiling like a dork. “How long do you think it’ll be until it feels more Daddy/little boy-like?”
The power was his, in that sense. It would take no effort to submit to Mad, and I could sense something else changing too. Like…my thought process? I wondered if that was what I’d read—regression and embracing a younger mind-set once I was more comfortable and settled.
“Well…” He took a sip of his beer, then returned with his forearms on the table. “You have a job where you have to be assertive—you’re a dominant force on the ice. So, we’ll have to find a balance. But in the end, I think it’ll happen naturally. More than that, I don’t think you’re that little. We’ll just have to see what feels right for you.”
I scrunched my nose. “You don’t think I’m a Little?”
“No, I mean…” he chuckled, pensive. “I think your Little mode will be special, just like you.
